Utopian ambitions for the blood bank of the future
Sanquin has come a long way since 1998, when the Dutch Blood Supply Act authorised it to manage the country’s need for blood and blood products as the only organisation in the Netherlands. Alongside meeting the responsibilities of a national blood bank for decades, Sanquin has steadily gone the extra mile when it comes to tackling challenges in haematology, immunology and oncology.

As of May 2022, the Japanese multinational Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. is the newest resident of the Health & Innovation District (Hid) around Sanquin's head office. At the Hid, start-ups and scale-ups, the business community and knowledge institutions work together to translate scientific research into practical applications, making healthcare better and more affordable worldwide.

A department of the Public Health Service of Amsterdam (GGD) regional laboratory is the newest Health & Innovation District (Hid) partner. A team of around six health service staff have settled into an inspiring new workplace taking advantage of the facilities offered on our campus.

Human plasma is an amazing substance; it contains thousands of proteins that are essential for our bodies to function. For people who are deficient in one or more of these proteins, donor plasma can be a real lifesaver. One of Hid’s earliest residents, Prothya Biosolutions, produces plasma-derived medications in close cooperation with a number of Sanquin units.

Extraordinary developments: Blood grown to order
Blood made to order, grown from stem cells: it might sound like science fiction, but for research group leader Emile van den Akker, it’s part of his daily work schedule. His Haematopoiesis research group at Sanquin Research is exploring ways of generating blood tailored to patients for whom it is difficult to find suitable donor blood. The research group is supported by a prestigious fund from ZonMw.

The New West Health & Innovation District was officially launched in April 2021, with new residents, events, programmes and an academy. Ector Hoogstad Architecten has designed a master plan focused on creating an open and vibrant district that offers genuine opportunities for innovation. From 2023, the first phase of the master plan will be built.

Hid tenant Frame Therapeutics develops on a novel cancer treatment based on personalised immunotherapies. The young start-up is like a duck takes to water on the Hid campus, not least because of the presence of Sanquin’s sophisticated laboratories.

Antibodies for treatment COVID-19
